Kids will learn how to play the 3 different bass drums which provide the foundation for all djembe music. As their skills progress after several courses, they'll also begin to play the djembe. They'll use real, hand-crafted African instruments and learn authentic, traditional drumming repertoire. And there will be opportunities for recital performances so the kids can demonstrate what they've learned.

- You must register your child by mail, phone or e-mail, by Friday, 6/13/08 for the Saturday classes or Monday, Tuesday, 6/17/08 for the Wednesday class, so we know how many kids to expect. You can either mail in your full tuition in advance, or bring cash or a check made payable to Hooked On Drums to the first class. If the class is canceled for any reason, we'll refund any tuition you've paid in advance.
- For youth 6 to 12 years old only. Children younger than 6 do not usually have the attention span or temperament for drumming, although special arrangements can be made if your child is very gifted musically. 5 is the absolute minimum age we will audition. Youth 13 to 17 years old may take our adult classes at a discounted price.
- We'll need a minimum of 4 youth to go forward with the class, so everyone can experience the interplay of the voices in the djembe orchestra--all 3 bass drums interacting with djembes.
- The class is very thorough, with lots of time devoted to learning each aspect of the music. A child can miss one or two classes and still have a complete learning experience, but if the child can't make three or more classes, you should wait for the next set of kids classes. We don't pro-rate or give credit for missed classes.
- HOD will provide all of the drums needed for the class. When we get to the djembe, if you don't own a djembe or if you own a synthetic drum, let us know and we'll bring an authentic, wood-and-goat-skin djembe for your child to use in class.

Kenwood is the next neighborhood north of Hyde Park on the South Side, near the Lake. From Lake Shore Drive:
- Exit at 47th St.
- Take 47th west under the Metra rail tracks to Lake Park (about 2 blocks from Lake Shore Drive).
- Turn right (north) onto Lake Park.
- Take Lake Park north to Kennicott Park (4434 S. Lake Park). Kennicott is on your left (west side of the street).
